Text Types - What is it?

Writing skills:

This program is designed for you to help you with your homework and assignments.

How can I use this information?

There is information on seven different text types. When your teachers ask you to write a text you should always ask yourself:

  • What is the purpose of this text?
  • What is my aim?
  • Who is my audience?

For example:

Is my audience:

  • My teacher
  • (Your teacher is always the audience.)
  • A tourist
  • (Your teacher has asked you to design a tourist brochure.)
  • A young child
  • (Your teacher has asked you to write a children's book.)

It is important to understand that some texts that you write may be a combination of different text types.

As your writing skill develops you might change the general organisational structure.

For example, in a narrative/recount text you might begin with the end of the story and then write about the events that led to this ending.
